My Pedagogic Creed Classic Reprint John Dewey 9781331145363 Books Reviews
This is a short manifesto in which Dewey outlines the basic elements of his philosophy of education. If you're approaching Dewey's works for the first time, you'd do well to read this first.
I can't believe there's no review of this book. John Dewey is regarded as a god in the ed schools, and this book is as clear a statement as you will get from this guy. Who is famous for being mushy and abstract.
Basically, I believe that Dewey was trying to sketch out a socialist education program on the assumption that the USA would soon be socialist, this back in 1897. But he can't come right out and announce all this. So he actually says things like "this sets the standard for cooking, sewing, manual training, etc." He talks about how teaching children to read too soon will get in the way of their social development, which is what is really important. The educator as anti-educator. Dewey started it.
I read this short book to write an essay about it. Hard work but there's some rewards. Stylistically, it's a long series of about 75 paragraphs that all start, "I believe...." Quite original in its way. Like a prayer meeting for educators. I notice that the price of this historical artifact is high; but I'm sure you can find parts of this book on the web.
If you are looking to find out the philosophy of John Dewey, this book should be your first stop. This reprint provides for clear reading and is true to the original.
John Dewey. Enough said.
Item as described and fast delivery. Highly recommend.
To look at the vision of what education could be versus what education has become is a very enlightening experience.
A short and brief exposure to early thoughts of John Dewey and his educational philosophy. Written in a fashion that resembles the constitution, this work gives a foundation for later and more prolific Dewey works.
